A celebrated artist is
suffering from a slump in her personal life and her
career. A failed suicide attempt lands her in a
psychiatric ward, where she becomes very comfortable. As
luck would have it, her insurance only covers a limited
stay. Following the advice of her fellow patients, an
alcoholic and a stalker, she takes on the personality of
baseball legend Darryl Strawberry.

The story centers around Eugene Morris Jerome, a
20-year-old "Brooklynite" who enlists in the United
States Army during WWII. Jerome is sent to Biloxi
Mississippi, during which time he learns to cope with
fellow soldiers of all walks of life, falls in love,
loses his virginity in less than ideal circumstances,
and more, all while having to cope with an eccentric
drill sergeant.
