Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu’s Pass Over ends October 10 at the August Wilson Theater

Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu Go over closes October 10 after premieres begin on August 4 and opens August 22 at the August Wilson Theater. This was only the second show to hold performances on Broadway since the COVID-19 pandemic kept theaters in darkness for nearly 15 months – and the first original work.

The entire Off-Broadway cast reunited for the production: contestant Tony Jon Michael Hill, Namir Smallwood and winner Tony Gabriel Ebert. The directing marked the Broadway debuts of Nwandu, Smallwood and director Danya Taymor.

Inspired by both Waiting for Godot and the Exodus saga, Go over follows Moses and Kitch, two young blacks who dream of an existence beyond their street corner. Following its premiere at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater Company, the play opened on Off-Broadway in 2018 as part of Lincoln Center Theater’s LCT3 lineup. A few months earlier, a film version of the Chicago staging, directed by Spike Lee, had debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. It’s now available to stream as an Amazon Prime original.

Nwandu changed the game between its iterations. “Although much on Go over remains a lament over the lives of Blacks stolen too soon, I am happy to confirm that my team and I, along with our producers, present a new release that centers the health, hope and joy of our audience, especially the Blacks, “the playwright said in a previous statement.” We come together to consider this play again, to tell a Broadway side of the story where Moses and Kitch both survive their encounter with white oppression. “
